Since the very beginning Holmewood House School has been strongly committed to the Christian Faith in the Anglican tradition. The school is inclusive, and there are no religious requirements regarding the admission of pupils or the employment of staff.
There is one Headmasters Assembly, one Assembly conducted by the head of RS, one Assembly conducted by a form or tutor group and one House Assembly every week, and a hymn-singing practice. All Assemblies have a religious content. Attendance at Assemblies is compulsory for all pupils.
Religious Studies is taught throughout the School and is compulsory for all pupils. Pupils are prepared for Common Entrance and for Scholarship in the subject. The content of the Religious Studies Syllabus is mainly Christian with the emphasis on the Bible. The festivals and practices of other faiths are referred to. The course of study for Common Entrance includes close scrutiny of the six major World Faiths. Preparation for Scholarship examinations in Religious Studies takes pupils into moral and philosophical considerations connected with religion, and is provided by an experienced lay member of staff.
Holmewood House School considers that it is the right of its pupils to be as fully informed as possible in this subject. It is important for their understanding of the world around them and of the motivation of many people. Religious Studies does not set out to proselytise, but does hope to equip pupils with sufficient knowledge to be understanding and tolerant, as well as to be in possession of a vital part of their heritage. If indeed they do come to a response of faith in their lives then we hope that what they have learned at Holmewood House will be a distinct benefit.
